2.5 Connecting to a debugWire target

Note: Programmer or Emulator does NOT power the target board which should be powered from an additional power supply. VCC and GND are used for detecting the level of the target board.


The definition of debugWire interface is shown in Figure 2.5.1:

When designing an application PCB which includes an AVR with the debugWIRE interface, the pinout shown in Figure 2.5.2 below should be used.

NOTE: The debugWIRE interface can not be used as a programming interface. This means that the SPI interface must also be available (as shown in Figure 2.5.3, “SPI header pinout”) in order to program the target.

Generally use the "10-pin (JTAG) to 6-pin (SPI) probe adapter cable" to connect the JTAGICE XPII to a debugWIRE target.
