2.3 Connecting to an ISP target

The default connector of USB AVRISP is 10-pin ISP Connector.

Note: Programmer or Emulator does NOT power the target board which should be powered from an additional power supply. VCC and GND are used for detecting the level of the target board.

1. Standard 10-pin ISP header pinout

The "red X" on GND means the target board could connect to GND or just NOT CONNECT.

Connecting the AVRISP to a 10-pin ISP target with the default connector directly.

2. Standard 6-pin ISP header pinout

You should use a probe adapter cable to connect AVRISP to a 6-pin ISP target. The figure below shows how to use the ”10-pin to 6-pin ISP cable“ which is shipped with the AVRISP.

  1. connect the 10-pin header of the ”10-pin to 6-pin ISP cable“ to the ISP connector of the AVRISP
  2. connect the 6-pin connector of the ”10-pin to 6-pin ISP cable“ to the target

The red wire connects the 2nd pinout of 6-pin ISP and 10-pin ISP, refer to which the two interfaces can mate with each other.

3. Custom ISP header

A 10-wire multicolour custom connector cable will be shipped with the AVRISP for connecting to the custom ISP target. In this case, please note that:

  1. 6 key connections are required: MISO, MOSI, SCK, RESET, VCC, GND
  2. DO NOT reverse the VCC and GND, which would do great damage to the AVRISP
  3. MISO MOSI SCK requires pull-up resistors while long connecting
