2.3 Connecting to an ISP target

The default connector of USB AVRISP CH is 6-pin ISP Connector.

Note: Programmer or Emulator does NOT power the target board which should be powered from an additional power supply. VCC and GND are used for detecting the level of the target board.

1. Standard 10-pin ISP header pinout

The "red X" on GND means the target board could connect to GND or just NOT CONNECT.

You should use a probe adapter cable to connect AVRISP CH to a 10-pin ISP target. The figure below shows how to use the ”6-pin to 10-pin ISP cable“ which is shipped with the AVRISP CH.

  1. connect the 6-pin header of the ”6-pin to 10-pin ISP cable“ to the ISP connector of the AVRISP CH
  2. connect the 10-pin connector of the ”6-pin to 10-pin ISP cable“ to the target

The red wire connects the 2nd pinout of 6-pin ISP and 10-pin ISP, refer to which the two interfaces can mate with each other.

2. Standard 6-pin ISP header pinout

Connecting the AVRISP CH to a 6-pin ISP target with the default connector directly.

3. Custom ISP header

A 6-wire multicolour custom connector cable will be shipped with the AVRISP CH for connecting to the custom ISP target. In this case, please note that:

  1. 6 key connections are required: MISO, MOSI, SCK, RESET, VCC, GND
  2. DO NOT reverse the VCC and GND, which would do great damage to the AVRISP CH
  3. MISO MOSI SCK requires pull-up resistors while long connecting
